Puros Conservancy — Hoarusib River Floodplain Dispersed Camp

The Hoarusib River floodplain near Puros village is one of the genuine wild camps of the Kunene Region — open sand and scrub mopane on the banks of an ephemeral river that still draws desert-adapted elephant, lion, and giraffe through regularly. You pitch wherever the ground is flat enough, the sky overhead is enormous, and the nearest light pollution is hours away. Access is managed under the Puros Conservancy; a small conservation fee is payable to the community at the Puros village entry point. No facilities whatsoever — pack everything in and out.

The route from Sesfontein follows rough gravel and sand tracks through the Kaokoland, requiring 4WD with good clearance. River crossings vary by season — after any rain the Hoarusib can run and become impassable for days. Best dry-season window is May through October. Fuel up fully in Opuwo or Sesfontein before heading in; there is nothing between those towns and Purros.
