Hoarusib River Mouth — Skeleton Coast Desert River Delta

The Hoarusib River is one of the Kunene Region’s great ephemeral watercourses, draining the Kaokoveld highlands before carving through the Skeleton Coast to the sea. At its mouth, the river fans out into a broad clay and sand delta scattered with driftwood, seal bones, and the footprints of desert-adapted elephants that trek down the riverbed to access coastal fog moisture. The landscape is genuinely alien — ochre clay formations, cold grey ocean, and absolute silence except for wind and surf. This is one of the northern Skeleton Coast’s iconic photographic locations.

Access is only possible with a valid Skeleton Coast Park permit and is within the restricted concession zone north of Torra Bay — most independent overlanders reaching here will be running a self-sufficient expedition. The river crossing itself can be challenging depending on recent rains and sand conditions. No facilities whatsoever. Plan fuel loads from Sesfontein or Opuwo for northern approaches, or Palmwag from the south.
