Gibb River Road — Galvans Gorge Creek Dispersed Camp
Galvans Gorge is one of the Gibb’s open secrets — a short scramble off the main road drops you into a sandstone slot with a deep, clear waterhole and a Wandjina rock art site on the wall. The dispersed camping here isn’t formalised; rigs pull off along the creek flats on either side of the road crossing and spread out among the paperbarks and pandanus. Dry season only — the creek floods hard in the Wet and the road itself closes. Expect dust, flies, and absolute silence once the day-trippers clear out around dusk.
Access is directly off the Gibb River Road roughly 130 km east of Derby. No facilities, no signage marking camp areas specifically. High-clearance 2WD can manage the main road in dry season but a 4WD is strongly recommended if you’re pushing further into station tracks. Cell service: none. Carry your own water — the gorge waterhole is permanent but not for drinking without treatment.
