The Gibb River Road punches 700 km through the heart of the Kimberley between Derby and Kununurra, and the southern entry via Windjana Gorge adds an extra layer of history: crocodile-watched limestone walls rising straight out of the Napier Range, carved by the Lennard River over millennia. Most crews pick up the Gibb proper at the Windjana junction off the Great Northern Highway, then push north-west through Tunnel Creek — a pitch-black bat cave you drive, wade, and headlamp your way through — before hitting the corrugated main stem. Bell Gorge, Manning Gorge, El Questro, and the Pentecost River crossing are the marquee waypoints, and every single one earns its reputation.
Rated moderate to difficult depending on recent grading and rainfall, the Gibb demands a proper 4WD with a lift, a full-size spare minimum, UHF CB, and enough fuel to cover 300-plus km between reliable stops — Imintji and Mount Barnett roadhouses are your lifelines. Run it May through September only; the wet season closes the road entirely. Multiple river crossings can hit axle-deep after late-season rains even in May. Expect 7 to 10 days to do it properly — rush it and you’ll miss everything worth coming for. Remote medical evac is very real out here. Satellite communicator is non-negotiable.

Can a stock Hilux or Land Cruiser 200 Series handle the full Gibb River Road traverse?
A stock LC200 or Hilux can make it, but you'll be pushing your luck on the rougher creek crossings and rocky station tracks leading into the gorges. Minimum bar is a capable 4WD with genuine high clearance, good all-terrain tyres, and two full-size spares — the corrugations and sharp ironstone gravel will destroy street tyres and eat spare tyres faster than you expect.
When exactly does the Gibb River Road open and close each year?
Typically open May through September — the dry season window. The road usually closes or becomes impassable from October through April when wet season flooding turns creek crossings into moving walls of water. Check current conditions with the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley before you leave, because flood damage can close sections unpredictably even in early dry season.
Are there any permits or entry fees required for the Gibb River Road itself?
The road is free to drive, but several gorges and station homesteads along the route charge day-use or camping fees — El Questro, Home Valley Station, and Manning Gorge all have their own fee structures. Budget for these as you go; carry cash because EFTPOS is not guaranteed at every stop.
What's the hardest section of the route and what makes it genuinely technical?
The creek crossings — particularly Pentecost River near Home Valley Station — are the crux moments most rigs will remember. The Pentecost can run thigh-deep with a rocky, uneven bottom even mid-dry-season, and a wrong line can put water through your air intake. The corrugations across the full 700km are also brutally relentless and will shake loose anything not properly secured in your rig.
How far apart are fuel stops along the Gibb River Road, and what's the realistic fuel range I need?
Fuel is available at Derby, Imintji Store, Mount Barnett Roadhouse, Home Valley Station, and Kununurra — but gaps between stops can exceed 250km and hours of hard corrugated driving. A minimum 180-litre total fuel capacity (tank plus jerry cans) is the realistic floor; don't assume any roadhouse will be open or stocked when you arrive.
