The Nossob River hasn’t run with surface water in living memory, but the fossilised riverbed connecting Twee Rivieren and Mata-Mata in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park remains one of southern Africa’s most rewarding desert drives. The two-track trail runs 120 kilometres north through the red dunes of the southern Kalahari, passing waterholes at Cubitje Quap, Kaspersdraai, and Rooiputs — each one a predator magnet, especially in the dry season when lion, leopard, and cheetah concentrate around the last standing water. The Botswana fence on your left and the empty dunes on your right are your only navigation aids; the track is unmarked but unmistakable.
This is a moderate overland route rather than a technical rock-crawl — the challenge is logistics, not terrain. A high-clearance 4WD is mandatory; soft sand sections demand airing down to 20 psi. Carry three days of food and fuel past Twee Rivieren (Mata-Mata has limited supplies), and bring minimum 20 litres of water per person. A South African National Parks permit is required, booked well in advance for peak season (June–August). Cell service is non-existent end to end. Two wilderness camps — Rooiputs and Nossob — break the journey. This is Kalahari on its own terms: vast, quiet, and unforgiving if you’re underprepared.

Can a stock Land Cruiser 200 or similar high-clearance 4WD handle this without a lift?
Yes. A stock high-clearance 4WD with low-range is the minimum and sufficient for the fossil riverbed track. Soft sand sections between the dunes will demand proper airing down — 18-20 PSI front and rear — more than any suspension modification will.
Is the Nossob riverbed route open year-round?
No. The route is best driven May through September during the dry season. Summer (October–April) brings extreme heat exceeding 50°C, flash flood risk in the riverbeds, and SANParks may close sections after rain. Check conditions with SANParks before departure.
Do I need a permit, and can I just show up at the gate?
Yes, a permit is required — this runs through Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, managed by SANParks. You must book entry and any camp stops in advance through SANParks; walk-up availability is extremely limited and often non-existent during peak dry season. Book at sanparks.org well ahead.
What's the hardest section and what actually makes it technical?
The deep loose sand in the Nossob and Auob fossil riverbeds is the consistent challenge — not rocks or ledges. Vehicles that haven't aired down properly or drivers unfamiliar with momentum-based sand driving will bog repeatedly. There are no recovery services; a stuck vehicle is your problem to solve with your own kit.
How much fuel range do I need, and where can I resupply between Twee Rivieren and Mata-Mata?
There is no fuel between Twee Rivieren and Mata-Mata — that's the full 120km stretch with zero resupply. Carry enough fuel for at minimum 300km to account for sand driving's heavy consumption, plus emergency reserve. Mata-Mata has limited fuel but confirm availability with SANParks before relying on it.
