Algonquin Provincial Park Backroads

Deep wilderness access in Ontario's premier park

Easy

Algonquin’s backroad system opens up 7,653 square kilometers of Canadian Shield wilderness that most visitors never see. These old logging roads and fire access routes wind between pristine lakes, connecting backcountry campsites accessible only by 4WD. The Radiant Lake Road and Basin Road system provides the deepest penetration into the park’s interior, while the abandoned Brent Road offers a challenging route to the Petawawa River. Rock Creek Road leads to some of the park’s most isolated fishing spots where brook trout still run wild.

Difficulty varies from easy gravel roads to rough, rocky tracks requiring high clearance and possibly 4WD after heavy rains. Many routes have water bars, loose rocks, and muddy sections. A park permit is required for backcountry camping, and some roads close during fire season. Best tackled May through October when gates are open. The reward is solitude in one of Ontario’s premier wilderness areas, with opportunities for moose watching, excellent fishing, and backcountry camping under some of the darkest skies in southern Canada.
