Gibb River Road — Imintji to Adcock Gorge via Bells Creek and Barnett River

The Gibb River Road earns its reputation nowhere harder than the 180-kilometre corridor between Imintji Community and Adcock Gorge. You’ll cross the Barnett River — knee-deep in the dry season, thigh-deep and fast after rain — then push through relentless corrugations past Mount Barnett Station to reach Manning Gorge, where a waist-deep wade earns you one of the Kimberley’s finest freshwater pools. Adcock Gorge sits a few kilometres further east, a narrow sandstone slot that most day-trippers never find because the track into it is a genuine loose-rock crawl.
This is not a graded road — it’s a dry-season dirt track that punishes underprepared vehicles. Minimum two spare tyres, rated recovery points, and an ARB-style compressor are baseline. Fuel from Imintji servo; the next reliable stop is Mount Barnett Station. The crossing at Barnett River must be scouted on foot first — always. Open roughly May to October; the road closes entirely in the Wet. No phone coverage from Imintji east. Self-registration camping at Mount Barnett and Manning Gorge. You leave here tyre-worn and gorge-soaked. That’s exactly the point.

Can a stock Land Cruiser 200 Series handle this stretch without a lift?
A stock 200 Series will get through in dry season, but two spare tyres are non-negotiable — corrugations and sharp ironstone will destroy a single spare fast. The Barnett River crossing can run thigh-deep after recent rain, so factory ground clearance is marginal if water levels are up; check Main Roads WA conditions before you leave Derby.
Is this section driveable in April or November?
No. The Gibb closes — sometimes formally, always practically — during wet season (November through April). Crossings like Barnett River and Bells Creek become impassable and the road surface turns to bog. Stick to May through October.
Do I need a permit to drive the Gibb River Road or camp along this stretch?
No permit is required for the road itself. If you detour into Imintji Store or community land, respect community rules. Some station stays along the corridor charge a small nightly fee — carry cash, there's no EFTPOS out here.
What's the hardest section and what should I actually expect?
The Barnett River crossing is the crux — depth varies wildly depending on recent rain and it's rocky-bottomed, not sandy, so momentum games don't apply. Beyond that, extended washboard corrugations between Bells Creek and Barnett will loosen bolts, crack brittle plastic, and rattle your gear to pieces if you haven't secured it properly. Drop tyre pressure and slow down; there's no shortcut through corrugations.
How far is it between fuel stops on this section, and can I get water at Adcock Gorge?
Imintji Store at the western end sells fuel but hours are limited and stock isn't guaranteed — fill up in Derby before you commit. It's roughly 180km to the Barnett River Gorge area with no resupply in between, so carry a full jerry can minimum. There's no treated water at dispersed camp spots; filter from the river crossings or carry all you need.
