Trans-Kalahari Crossing — Ghanzi to Rakops via Central Kalahari Game Reserve

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is one of the largest protected areas on Earth, and driving through it is not a casual decision. The main route enters via Matswere Gate east of Ghanzi, crosses the fossil riverbeds and fossil valleys of the reserve’s core — Deception Valley, Sunday Pan, Passage Valley — and exits via Khumaga toward Rakops on the eastern edge. These are the same valleys where Mark and Delia Owens camped for years studying brown hyenas. The sand is deep Kalahari powder, the tracks are faint and sometimes contradictory, and the game is thick: lions, wild dogs, gemsbok, and brown hyenas working the pans at night. There are no fences, no rescue services, and no mobile signal inside the reserve.
This is an expert-level expedition route, full stop. You need a minimum of two well-equipped vehicles with high-lift jacks, maximum-airing-down capability, and enough fuel to cover 400+ km between fill-ups. Entry permits are required through Botswana’s Department of Wildlife and National Parks; book well in advance for peak season. Run it June through September only — summer rains turn the calcrete and clay pans into traps. Water must be carried; boreholes exist but cannot be relied upon. This is the kind of drive that sorts out who’s actually equipped from who just thinks they are.

What kind of vehicle do you actually need to complete this route?
An expedition-built 4WD with a snorkel, high-lift jack, maxtrax, and a minimum 200-liter long-range fuel setup. Stock anything will get buried in the deep Kalahari sand within the first day — this route has stranded prepared rigs, let alone stock ones.
When is the route passable and what happens if you go in the wrong season?
June through September is the only realistic window — dry season keeps the sand firm enough to make progress. The summer rains (November–March) turn sections into impassable bog and dramatically increase flash flood risk on the pans.
Do you need a permit to drive through the Central Kalahari Game Reserve?
Yes. You need an entry permit from the Botswana Department of Wildlife and National Parks before you enter CKGR — you cannot buy it at the gate. Apply through the DWNP in advance; showing up without one means you're turning around.
What's the hardest section of the route and what should I expect?
The deep sand tracks through the central reserve between Piper Pans and Deception Valley are the worst — continuous soft sand, frequent washouts, and zero recovery assistance within hundreds of kilometers. Expect to deflate to 12–15 PSI and still dig out. Lions are active in this area, so a breakdown after dark is a serious situation, not a minor inconvenience.
