Skippers Canyon – Shotover Riverbed Camp

Dispersed Camping

Skippers Canyon outside Queenstown is one of New Zealand’s most famous 4WD runs — a narrow, blasted-cliff road above the Shotover River that most rental companies explicitly prohibit. The reward for those who make it is raw, dispersed camping on the river flats below, surrounded by schist cliffs and near-total silence. The canyon walls glow orange at sunset. There are no facilities, no fee, and no ranger presence — leave no trace is your entire rulebook here.

Access from Coronet Peak Road to the Skippers Road is 4WD only — no exceptions. The road is narrow, unguarded, and exposed in places; confident drivers only. Check Queenstown Lakes District Council for current road status as sections close seasonally or after weather events. Cell service is zero once you drop into the canyon. Queenstown is your last fuel and supply stop.

Schist cliffs, river flats, no guardrails.
