Llanos Orientales Cattle Trail Network

Cowboy trails across Colombia's endless eastern plains

Moderate

The Llanos Orientales stretch endlessly toward Venezuela, where Colombian cowboys still move cattle along ancient paths that become your overland route through one of South America’s last great wilderness frontiers. This network of interconnected ranch roads and cattle trails runs from Villavicencio east to the Orinoco River, crossing dozens of rivers that have no bridges — just ford crossings marked by the hoofprints of countless cattle drives. You’ll pass working ranches where vaqueros still rope from horseback and sleep under stars bigger than you’ve ever seen.

High clearance is mandatory, 4WD recommended during wet season (May-October) when the savanna becomes a maze of mud and standing water. Dry season (November-April) firms up the trails but brings its own challenges with river crossings at their lowest, revealing rocky bottoms that can damage oil pans. Stock up on fuel in Villavicencio — there’s nothing out there but cattle, capybara, and endless grassland. This is pure overland adventure through landscapes that look exactly as they did 300 years ago.
