Zion Canyon Overlook Road to Smithsonian Butte — Virgin River Rim and Red Cliffs Desert Circuit

Smithsonian Butte Back Country Byway is a legitimate secret sitting in plain sight twelve miles south of Zion National Park’s south entrance. The 10-mile dirt loop off Highway 59 near Hildale climbs red sandstone benches above the Virgin River and delivers unobstructed views of Zion’s West Temple and Towers of the Virgin from a vantage point most Zion visitors never see. The road surface ranges from firm packed clay to loose red sand with embedded sandstone shelf sections — nothing extreme, but the shelf edges are real and vertical enough to demand attention. The Smithsonian Butte itself is the high point, and the views from the north-facing bench are Zion front-row without the $35 entrance ticket.
This is accessible to most high-clearance 2WD rigs in dry conditions, but wet slickrock and clay turn it into a 4WD proposition fast. Best season is March through May and September through November — summer heat is oppressive and afternoon monsoons make the clay sections dangerous. No permit required. BLM Hurricane Field Office manages it. Water is nonexistent on route; Hildale and Hurricane are your fuel and water stops. Dispersed camping is permitted on BLM ground at the north end of the loop. Cell service is spotty at best.

Yes, dispersed camping is allowed on BLM land along the byway — no hookups, no facilities, pack everything out. Fuel up before you head out; Hildale is the nearest town but services are limited, so St. George (~30 miles northwest) is the safe bet for gas and resupply.
