Pothole Canyon to Wedge Overlook — San Rafael Swell North Circuit via Fuller Bottom Road
Utah's Little Grand Canyon, no crowds, no rails.
The Wedge Overlook is the payoff, but the drive through the north end of the San Rafael Swell is what earns it. Coming off Fuller Bottom Road from Castle Dale, you cross open sagebrush benches that slowly give way to the fractured sandstone of the Swell’s interior. The San Rafael River cuts a dark, winding slash through the plateau here — locals call it ‘the Little Grand Canyon’ and they’re not wrong. The route passes through Fuller Bottom, skirts the river bottom where cottonwoods crowd the banks, and climbs to the Wedge rim where you’re staring down a sheer 1,000-foot drop with zero guardrails and zero crowds. Side excursions into Wedge Canyon’s upper drainage add technical interest.
This is a high-clearance route rather than a technical 4×4 grinder — most of it is maintained gravel and two-track that a capable stock truck handles without drama. The stretch through the river bottom gets soft after rain and can become impassable when wet; Emery County roads turn to slick clay grease in moisture. Best season is March through May and September through November. No permit required. Water is not reliably available; carry everything you need. Dispersed camping along the rim is outstanding and completely undeveloped. Fuel in Castle Dale before you leave pavement. Cell service is absent the entire route.
