Wells Gray Park Clearwater Valley Road

Volcanic wilderness access through Wells Gray Park

Moderate

The Clearwater Valley Road cuts 63 kilometers into the heart of Wells Gray Provincial Park, following the original pack trail used by fur traders and surveyors in the 1800s. This gravel arterial provides access to some of BC’s most spectacular waterfalls, including the thundering Helmcken Falls and the lesser-known but equally impressive Dawson Falls. The real prize lies at road’s end—Trophy Mountain’s subalpine meadows burst with wildflowers from mid-July through August, creating a carpet of color that stretches to the volcanic peaks beyond.

While the main road stays moderate difficulty, suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, the side spurs to hidden fishing holes and backcountry campsites demand serious 4WD capability. Best tackled May through October, though early season means dealing with washouts from snowmelt. The park charges day-use fees, and backcountry camping requires self-registration. Cell service is spotty at best. What makes this route special is the payoff—pristine wilderness camping beside alpine lakes, world-class hiking, and the kind of volcanic landscape that feels like another planet.
