Vermont Route 100A Crown Point Road

This forgotten military supply route carved through Vermont’s Green Mountains in the 1750s still shows scars from Continental Army wagons hauling cannons to Lake Champlain. The 18-mile track climbs from Granville Gulf through dense hardwood forest, crossing Hancock Brook three times before reaching the technical rock ledge section near Texas Falls. Moss-covered stone foundations mark old way stations where troops rested, while the steepest climb hits 15% grade through a boulder field that’ll test your spotter’s patience.

This is solid intermediate territory requiring high-clearance 4WD and decent tires for the wet granite slabs. Best tackled May through October when brook crossings stay manageable, though mud season turns the middle section into a slippery mess. No permits needed since it’s mostly on National Forest land, but fuel up in Warren—nearest services are 25 miles either direction. What you get is a genuine piece of American history wrapped in technical driving through some of Vermont’s most remote timber country.
