Cederberg Wilderness Rock Route

Ancient rock art through sandstone wilderness

Difficult

The Cederberg’s weathered sandstone formations create a moonscape of twisted pillars, hidden valleys, and natural arches that shelter 2,000-year-old San rock paintings. This technical route connects remote archaeological sites through terrain that changes from smooth slickrock to loose scree fields, passing landmarks like the Maltese Cross formation and Stadsaal Caves where ancient Bushmen artists painted hunters pursuing now-extinct quagga. The track drops into narrow kloofs where crystal-clear mountain pools reflect towering rock walls, then climbs exposed ridges with 360-degree views across the fynbos-covered mountains to the distant Karoo.

Difficult rating demands experienced rock crawling skills for the steep sandstone slabs and loose boulder fields, with modified 4WD essential including underbody protection and aggressive tires. Recovery points and winch recommended for several technical sections that offer no bypass options. Best tackled April through September when mountain streams run clear and temperatures stay tolerable, though flash flood awareness critical in narrow canyons. Wilderness permit required from CapeNature, with designated camping at Algeria and Driehoek. You’ll earn access to pristine wilderness and some of South Africa’s most significant rock art galleries.
