Tankwa Karoo National Park Dispersed Camping Area

Dispersed Camping

This sprawling national park in South Africa’s Northern Cape allows completely free-form camping across its 143,000 hectares of semi-desert terrain. Pick any spot that appeals – rocky outcrops for wind protection, open flats for sunrise views, or hidden valleys for solitude. The landscape is classic Karoo: sparse vegetation, distant mountains, and silence so complete it feels physical. Wildlife includes springbok, gemsbok, and smaller desert dwellers, while nights deliver some of the Southern Hemisphere’s finest stargazing.

The main access road is graded gravel suitable for any vehicle, but venturing into the backcountry requires high clearance for rocky terrain and sandy washes. No facilities except at the Tankwa Padstal entry gate where you can get basic supplies. Bring all water – this is true desert. Winter months (May-September) offer perfect weather, while summer heat can be brutal. The annual AfrikaBurn event transforms part of the park each April, so plan accordingly.
