Tankwa Karoo Road R355 — Ceres to Calvinia via Karoopoort and the Tankwa Karoo

Hours of Karoo gravel and almost nobody else

Easy

The R355 drops off the Ceres plateau at Karoopoort and dumps you into the Tankwa Karoo, one of the emptiest stretches of gravel in South Africa. It’s flat, hard-packed, and wide open, with quartzite ridges on the horizon and a sky that doesn’t quit. You pass the Tankwa Karoo National Park boundary and the Tankwa Padstal, a tin-roofed farm stall where the cold drinks matter. Then you climb the passes toward Calvinia, with Gannaga Pass on the way. The washboard is relentless, and the road is the whole point. The corrugations rattle loose anything you didn’t strap down, and sharp shale chews tires.

This is an Easy route on paper, but it punishes bad prep. Run a high-clearance 2WD or any 4×4, carry two full-size spares, and fill up in Ceres and Calvinia. Fuel is scarce in between, and so is cell service. Bring more water than you think you need. The Karoo summer is brutal, so go in spring (August to October) when the wildflowers show, or in the cooler months. After heavy rain the dry riverbeds can run and close sections. No permit is needed to drive through, but SANParks charges fees if you enter Tankwa Karoo National Park to camp. You get silence, stars, and a proper taste of the Karoo. Have a dirty day.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock 2WD SUV or bakkie do the R355?

Yes, if it has decent ground clearance and good tires. Nothing on the route needs 4WD, but sharp shale and long corrugations wreck tires, so carry two full-size spares, a plug kit, and a compressor.

When is the best time to drive the Tankwa Karoo road, and is it ever closed?

August-October and April-May are best, with mild days and cool nights. Summer can top 40°C, which is hard on tires and engines. Winter nights drop to freezing, and heavy rain can leave washaways and flooded dry riverbeds, so check conditions before you go.

Do I need a permit to drive the R355?

No. The R355 is a public provincial road, so there's no permit or toll. Tankwa Karoo National Park charges conservation fees at the gate and camping must be booked through SANParks. A Wild Card covers the daily fee.

What's the hardest part of the route?

The hard part is distance, not obstacles. Expect hours of washboard, loose gravel, sharp rock, and the occasional washout, plus the Karoopoort section. Fatigue and tire damage cause more problems than terrain, and a long stretch of road with almost no other traffic means a breakdown can leave you waiting a while.

Is there fuel or cell service between Ceres and Calvinia?

There is no cell service on most of the route, and you shouldn't count on fuel between the two towns. Fill up in Ceres, carry enough for the full ~250 km plus a reserve, and bring extra water, food, and a satellite communicator or offline maps. Tell someone your plan before you leave.
