Tug Hill Plateau Forest Road 7
Remote plateau crossing through NY's snowiest region
Forest Road 7 cuts across the windswept Tug Hill Plateau, a 2,100-square-mile wilderness that receives more snow than anywhere else in New York. This 18-mile gravel logging road connects the hamlet of Osceola to remote hunting camps near the Salmon River headwaters, passing through dense hardwood forests and abandoned farmsteads. The route crosses several unnamed creeks via concrete culverts and climbs gradually to over 1,800 feet elevation, offering glimpses of distant Lake Ontario on clear days.
Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance vehicles due to seasonal washouts and loose gravel sections. Spring mud season makes the road nearly impassable, while winter brings impassable snow depths. Best traveled June through October with emergency recovery gear recommended. No services exist along the route, and cell coverage is nonexistent. The payoff is solitude in New York’s largest wilderness area, with excellent dispersed camping opportunities and access to pristine brook trout waters.
