Skardu to Askole Jeep Road — Gateway to K2 and the Baltoro
The K2 approach road, one landslide at a time.
Every expedition to K2 starts the same way: bolted into the back of a Land Cruiser, hanging onto the roll bar while a Balti driver feathers a ledge above the Braldu River. The road climbs out of Skardu, crosses the Shigar Valley, then follows the Braldu Gorge up past Dassu and Chakpo to Askole at about 10,000 feet. Askole is the last village before the Baltoro Glacier. The road is carved into scree and cliff, with sections where a wheel or two hangs over the drop. Rockfall and washouts are routine, and crews with shovels clear the worst of it.
This is a difficult road. The technical bits are short but serious: narrow shelves, loose slides, and creek fords that swell with afternoon snowmelt. You want a short-wheelbase high-clearance 4×4 with a driver who knows the gorge, and most overlanders hire a local one. Budget a full day, 6 to 8 hours for roughly 65 miles. Go June through September. Trekkers and visitors need park and trekking permits, so sort those in Skardu. Carry your own fuel, water treatment, and a tow strap. Cell service fades after Shigar and disappears at Askole. You’ll end up at the foot of the world’s most serious mountains. Have a dirty day.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock SUV or a long-wheelbase rig handle the Skardu to Askole road?
Not reliably. The road is rated Difficult, with landslide debris, washouts and tight shelf sections, so a short-wheelbase high-clearance 4x4 is the minimum. Locals run Land Cruisers and Hilux-type trucks, and most visitors go with a local driver who knows where the road has slid.
When is the Skardu to Askole road open?
The best window is June through September. Winter snow and slides can shut it down, and in summer glacial melt raises the Braldu River and triggers rockfall and slides. Even in season, a slide can close the road for hours or days, so pad your schedule.
Do I need a permit to drive to Askole?
Yes. The route runs through Central Karakoram National Park and Gilgit-Baltistan jurisdiction, and permits are normally arranged through a licensed Pakistani tour operator. Fees and paperwork change, so confirm current requirements with your operator before you go.
What is the hardest part of the road?
The Braldu Gorge stretch is the worst of it. The road is a narrow shelf cut into unstable cliffs, with sheer drops to the river, slide zones that get rebuilt every season, and side-stream crossings. Drivers sometimes have passengers walk across the worst debris.
How long does the drive take, and can I get fuel or camp along the way?
Plan on 6-8 hours for the 65 miles (104.6 km) one way. Fill up in Skardu and carry spare fuel, since you can't count on fuel beyond it, and cell service is spotty. Dispersed camping is possible, and Askole has established trekker campsites at the road's end.
