Zoji La Southern Approach — Sindh Valley Riverside Dispersed Camp

Below Sonamarg, the Sindh River braids across wide gravel flats that have long served as informal overnight spots for truckers, military convoys, and the occasional overlander waiting for a weather window on Zoji La. The valley here is wide, cold at night, and spectacular — glacier-draped peaks press in from all sides and the river noise drowns out the highway traffic on NH1. Flat ground is easy to find on the gravel bars; no facilities whatsoever, just rock, water, and sky.

Access is directly off the Srinagar–Leh National Highway. Snow at the pass itself can close the road from November through May — confirm BRO clearance status before you commit. The approach road to Sonamarg is paved but floods seasonally. This is a no-infrastructure spot: carry all water, fuel, and food. Permits for onward travel into Ladakh must be arranged in Srinagar before departure.
