Mullaghanish to Millstreet — Derrynasaggart Mountain Road via Mushera

Cork-Kerry border bog road, no nonsense.

Moderate

The Derrynasaggarts sit on the Cork-Kerry border like a forgotten wall, and the track across Mushera is the kind of road the Irish government hasn’t decided whether to maintain or abandon. Leaving the R582 west of Macroom, the track climbs through cutover bog onto the open shoulder of Mullaghanish — home to a cluster of wind turbines that make excellent navigation markers in the mist. The route skirts below Mushera summit (644m) before descending a broken stone lane into the Finnow River valley above Millstreet. The upper section crosses a series of bog drains with no culverts; soft ground each side makes line choice critical, especially after the Atlantic fronts roll through in autumn.

Difficulty sits firmly at moderate with pockets of difficult after wet weather — which in west Cork means most of the year. A high-clearance diesel with good all-terrain tyres handles it fine; low range will be used. Best run June through August when the ground firms slightly. No fuel or cell service above the valley floors. Millstreet Country Park is a reasonable base if you want a roof. This one rewards patience — the views across the Blackwater Valley and back toward MacGillycuddy’s Reeks on a clear morning are worth every bog drain. Have a dirty day.
