Menominee Indian Reservation Keshena Falls Backcountry Circuit

The Keshena Falls Circuit winds through 40,000 acres of pristine Menominee forest that’s never seen a clearcut, following traditional hunting roads older than Wisconsin statehood. The route drops into the Wolf River gorge where Keshena Falls pounds through a granite chute that local Menominee consider sacred ground. You’ll navigate root-bound forest roads through cathedral stands of 400-year-old white cedar, past beaver ponds that reflect ancient hemlocks, and along ridgelines where you can see Lake Winnebago on clear days.

Easy to moderate terrain that any stock SUV can handle, though recent beaver activity occasionally floods low sections requiring short detours. Tribal permits required — stop at the Menominee Nation offices in Keshena for day-use passes. Best visited June through September when roads are maintained and falls are accessible. No dispersed camping allowed; respect tribal sovereignty and cultural sites. What you experience here is Wisconsin as it existed before European settlement, plus some of the Midwest’s most spectacular whitewater geology in complete solitude.
