Medicine Bow Peak Access Road
Wyoming's highest technical 4x4 challenge
The Medicine Bow Peak Access Road climbs relentlessly from 10,400 feet at Lake Marie to within striking distance of Wyoming’s second-highest peak at 12,013 feet. This technical route follows an old mining road through the Snowy Range, crossing boulder fields and alpine tundra where the treeline disappears entirely. Key obstacles include the notorious Rock Creek crossing at mile 4.2 and a technical shelf section known as ‘The Narrows’ where the road clings to granite cliffs with no margin for error.
Expert difficulty demands lifted 4WD with rock sliders, low-range gearing, and experienced drivers only. Access limited to July through September due to severe winter conditions above treeline. No permits required but carry emergency gear, extra fuel, and warm clothes as weather changes rapidly at altitude. The reward is unmatched alpine scenery, access to Medicine Bow’s highest peaks, and camping spots where you’re literally on top of Wyoming with 360-degree views stretching to Colorado’s Front Range.
