Medano Pass Primitive Road — Great Sand Dunes to Wet Mountain Valley
Sand, creek crossings, and a Sangre de Cristo crossing.
Medano Pass Road is one of those routes that earns its keep twice: first in sand, then in altitude. Starting from the Great Sand Dunes National Park eastern boundary, you immediately hit Medano Creek crossings — multiple, braided, and shifty in spring runoff. The creek is the road for stretches, and your wheels spend real time churning through sand and water before the terrain climbs into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. At 9,982-foot Medano Pass, the San Luis Valley opens behind you and the Wet Mountain Valley drops away ahead. It’s a two-landscape drive in one. Total distance from the park boundary to the Huerfano County side is roughly 22 miles of primitive road through San Isabel National Forest.
This is legitimate technical terrain — deep sand near the dunes demands aired-down tires (12-15 PSI), and the creek crossings require low-range 4WD. Lockers are a serious advantage in the soft creek bottom. High-lift jack and recovery gear are not optional. Best season is July through September; spring runoff makes the creek crossings aggressive and potentially impassable. No permits required to drive the route, though Great Sand Dunes NPS has an entrance fee. Limited dispersed camping is available on the San Isabel National Forest side. No fuel for 50-plus miles, so top off in Alamosa or Westcliffe.
