Hvíthamar to Gjógv Highland Track
Highland plateau to the Norse gorge harbour.
Gjógv is built around a natural sea gorge — the only natural harbour in the Faroe Islands that isn’t a beach — and the village has been there since the Norse settlers figured out the gorge beat rowing around the headland in a storm. Getting there from the south by the highland track instead of the sealed road is the kind of decision that earns you a story. The route climbs from the road above Haldarsvík onto the Hvíthamar plateau, a broad Arctic-feeling moorland at around 400 metres, then works north through tussock grass and loose scree before dropping steeply into the back of Gjógv. The views across the Kallsoy sound and toward the northern islands are serious.
This is proper Faroese highland driving — soft peat, basalt field sections, no markers, and a descent into Gjógv that gets rocky and steep in the final kilometre. High-clearance 4WD is minimum; a locker helps on the descent. The track is only viable in summer, roughly May through September, and even then a rain day will close it effectively. No permits. Fuel in Eiði before you go — nothing at Gjógv. Bring your own water. Cell service cuts out on the plateau. The gorge, the old stone houses, and the fact you didn’t take the tarmac road make this one worth the effort.
