Harrison-Crawford State Forest Ridge Road
Limestone ridge technical through Indiana karst country.
The Ridge Road cuts a gnarly line across the spine of Harrison-Crawford State Forest, threading between limestone sinkholes and abandoned quarries that fed Louisville’s building boom a century back. This isn’t your typical Midwest gravel cruise — the route drops into steep-walled hollers where Wyandotte Cave’s underground rivers have carved the landscape into a Swiss cheese of karst features. You’ll navigate around washouts where Blue River tributary streams have undercut the roadbed, and the climbing turns get tight enough to scrape paint off careless drivers threading between oak and hickory that crowd the track.
Moderate difficulty demands high-clearance 4WD when wet — the clay-over-limestone base turns greasy and the grade punches 20 percent in spots. Spring through fall works best, avoiding winter ice that makes the exposed ridges treacherous. No permits needed for the state forest roads, but fuel up in Corydon since there’s nothing out here. The payoff is classic Indiana backcountry: deep woods, limestone bluffs overlooking the Ohio River valley, and solitude that’s rare this close to Louisville metro.
