Blackwater Road to Kluskus Lakes

Deep Chilcotin wilderness adventure

Difficult

The Blackwater Road stretches deep into Chilcotin wilderness, following traditional Indigenous routes toward the Kluskus Lakes. This isn’t your typical forest service road — it’s a genuine backcountry adventure that winds through massive stands of lodgepole pine, crosses countless creek drainages, and opens into vast grassland plateaus where cattle still roam freely. The final push to Kluskus Lakes involves navigating some technical creek crossings and steep, loose climbs that’ll have you in low range.

This is serious remote country requiring experienced drivers with properly equipped 4WD vehicles, recovery gear, and multiple days of supplies. July through September offers the best conditions, but even then expect mud, creek crossings, and challenging terrain. No cell service for hundreds of kilometers, so satellite communication is wise. The payoff is incredible fishing, pristine wilderness camping, and a genuine sense of exploration that’s rare to find this accessible from Vancouver. Just remember — you’re in grizzly country, so camp smart.
