Big Buffalo Creek Forest Service Road

Deep Ozark backcountry through forgotten logging roads

Moderate

Big Buffalo Creek cuts deep through Mark Twain National Forest’s most isolated terrain, following old logging roads that wind past abandoned homesteads and through creek bottoms where wild hogs still root. The route starts near Marble Creek and climbs over rocky ridges before dropping into the Buffalo Creek drainage, where you’ll ford the creek multiple times during normal flows. The final section to Devil’s Well requires careful navigation through tight switchbacks carved into limestone bluffs.

This is legitimate backcountry — stock 4WD with skid plates and recovery gear mandatory. The creek crossings aren’t deep but the rocky bottoms will test your line choice, and the ridgeline sections get sketchy after rain when clay becomes greased glass. Late fall through early spring when the leaves are down and snakes are dormant. No cell service for miles, but you get true Ozark solitude and some of the best wild turkey hunting country in Missouri.
