Gold rush ghosts along BC's biggest lake
Atlin Lake Mining Road branches east from Highway 7 just south of Atlin townsite, following the eastern shore of BC’s largest natural lake through country that time forgot. This rough track passes abandoned hydraulic mining operations, rusted machinery from the 1900s gold rush, and ghost camps where prospectors once pulled fortunes from creek beds. The road deteriorates progressively, becoming extremely rocky and rutted after Surprise Lake, with several unbridged creek crossings that can be impassable during spring runoff.
Moderate to difficult depending on conditions — definitely high-clearance 4WD territory with recovery gear recommended for the final 20 kilometers. Best attempted June through September when water levels drop. No services whatsoever beyond Atlin village, so pack fuel, food, and camping gear. The solitude is profound: you might drive all day without seeing another vehicle. Dispersed camping opportunities are endless along lake shores and creek mouths. This is northern BC wilderness at its rawest — gold country where the mountains meet the sky.
