Wupatki Pueblo Ancestral Ruins
A remarkable collection of red sandstone pueblo ruins dating to around 1100 CE, when ancestral Puebloan peoples built multi-story structures in this high desert landscape. The main Wupatki Pueblo rises four stories and contained over 100 rooms, with a community room and ball court nearby. The ruins sit on a natural outcrop with sweeping views across the Painted Desert toward the San Francisco Peaks.
Accessed via the 36-mile Wupatki-Sunset Crater Loop Road, which connects to US-89 north of Flagstaff. The visitor center provides context and trail maps. Spring and fall offer the best conditions, with summer bringing intense heat and afternoon thunderstorms. Winter can bring snow and icy conditions to this 4,900-foot elevation site.
