Wave Rock — Hyden’s 15-Metre Granite Wave on the Holland Track Detour
Wave Rock is a curling, streaked granite cliff on the northern flank of Hyden Rock. It stands about 15 metres high and runs roughly 110 metres long, and the banded colours come from minerals washing down the face. There’s a short walk along the base, and a track up and over the top gives you a view across the wheatbelt flats. Go early or late when the light hits the stripes properly. Midday is busy with tour buses and caravans. It’s the main reason Hyden exists, and it makes an easy break for anyone working the Holland Track, which crosses this granite country on its way from Broomehill towards Coolgardie.
Access is sealed road right to the car park, so any rig gets there. The rock sits a short drive off the Holland Track line, so treat it as a resupply-and-wander day. Hyden has fuel and basic supplies nearby. Gate fees and facilities can change, so verify ahead. Don’t climb on wet rock, and keep to the marked paths, because the granite is slick and a fall will ruin the trip. Bring water in summer, since the flats hold heat.
Have a dirty day.
Fifteen metres of frozen granite surf.
