Great Western Woodlands Breakaway Hill Dispersed Area
Wild camping scattered across granite breakaways and salmon gum woodlands in one of Australia’s most intact temperate woodlands. Multiple clearings accommodate small groups, with natural windbreaks from ancient eucalyptus and seasonal wildflower displays that rival any botanical garden. Rock wallabies common at dawn and dusk. Completely undeveloped — no facilities, water, or rubbish collection.
Access via Hyden-Norseman Road then 40km of rough gravel tracks requiring high clearance. GPS coordinates essential as tracks are unmarked and confusing. Seasonal restrictions apply during fire danger periods (November-March). Carry extra water and fuel — nearest services 120km away in Hyden. Popular with serious bushwalkers and photographers but rarely crowded.
