Wave Rock
Wave Rock is a 2.7-billion-year-old granite inselberg that has been sculpted by weathering into the perfect form of a breaking ocean wave. The formation stretches 350 feet long and rises 47 feet high, with distinctive horizontal bands of color created by mineral staining over millions of years. A concrete retaining wall along the base collects rainwater for the nearby town, but doesn’t detract from the dramatic geological spectacle.
Located just outside Hyden, the rock is accessible via a short walk from the parking area. The site includes interpretive displays explaining the formation’s geology and Aboriginal cultural significance. Best photographed in afternoon light when the curved face is illuminated. Can be combined with nearby Hippo’s Yawn and other granite formations for a full day of exploration.
