Wakhan Corridor — Panj River Terrace Dispersed Camp near Langar

At the eastern mouth of the Tajik Wakhan near Langar village, the Panj River carves wide gravel benches between the road and the riverbank. Overlanders running the M41 east from Ishkashim to Langar have used these terraces for decades — flat ground, jaw-dropping views across the river into the Afghan Wakhan, and the kind of silence that only shows up above 3,000 metres. No infrastructure, no signage, no services. You’re sharing the valley with yaks and the occasional Wakhi shepherd.

Access is on the main Wakhan road, which is rough dirt and rock throughout — passable for high-clearance 4WD in dry season but sketchy after rain. A GBAO permit (Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast) is mandatory and must be obtained in Dushanbe or Osh before entry. Camping outside designated areas is tolerated but unregulated — leave nothing, take nothing. Best window is June through September; snow closes the upper valley by October.
