Wadbilliga National Park — Tuross River Gorge Upper Flats Dispersed Camp
Wadbilliga National Park is one of the least-visited protected areas on the NSW Far South Coast, and that’s exactly why it works for overlanders who want genuine solitude. The Tuross River corridor cuts through sandstone and granite country with flat gravelly banks that offer natural camping on seasonal flood terraces — open canopy, river sounds, no neighbours. Wombats, wallabies, and the occasional platypus in the quieter pools. Fire restrictions apply seasonally — check with NPWS Far South Coast before you leave pavement. This is part of a network used by through-runners on the Narooma-to-Delegate corridor.
Access is via unsealed NPWS management tracks off Wadbilliga Road — expect rough dirt and tight timber, high-clearance 4WD minimum. River levels dictate crossings; after rain it’s a different game. No signage, no facilities, no phone. Carry water treatment, paper topo maps, and tell someone where you’re going. Best season is autumn and spring — summers are hot and fire-prone, winter tracks can be soft.
Wild river flats, zero facilities, real Wadbilliga.
