Volcán Llaima Crater Rim Viewpoint
This viewpoint offers direct views into the crater of Volcán Llaima, one of Chile’s most active volcanoes. The 2008-2009 eruptions left fresh lava flows clearly visible from the rim. On clear days, you can see steam venting from the crater and across to Volcán Villarrica. The parking area sits at treeline among ancient araucaria forests.
Reached via the park’s main gravel road — any vehicle can make it, but the final 3km climb is steep with loose volcanic gravel. Best visibility in morning before clouds roll in. Volcanic activity can close access, so check with park rangers at the entrance. The contrast between green forest and black lava is stunning.
