Vasquez Rocks Natural Area

Otherworldly tilted sandstone formations rising from the Mojave, famous as a Star Trek filming location and historic hideout.

These dramatic 25-million-year-old sandstone slabs jut skyward at impossible angles, creating an alien landscape that’s been featured in countless films and TV shows. The main formation towers 150 feet above the desert floor, offering stellar photo ops and scrambling routes. Interpretive trails wind through the formations, connecting to Tataviam tribal sites and the cave where bandit Tiburcio Vásquez once hid from lawmen.

Access is straightforward off the Antelope Valley Freeway, with a paved parking area and restrooms. The site gets crowded on weekends with photographers and hikers. Summer temperatures can exceed 100°F, making early morning or late afternoon the sweet spot for exploration.
