Saddleback Butte State Park

Desert state park with stark Joshua tree landscape and a challenging summit trail near Lancaster.

This 3,000-acre desert park sits at the western edge of the Mojave Desert, dominated by the distinctive granite outcrop of Saddleback Butte rising 1,000 feet above the valley floor. The campground has 50 sites scattered among Joshua trees and desert scrub, with vault toilets and picnic tables but no hookups or showers. Water is available at the visitor center. The park gets busy on spring weekends when wildflowers bloom, but remains quiet most other times.

Access is straightforward via paved Avenue J East from Lancaster. The summit trail to Saddleback Butte is a steep 3.2-mile round trip with rewarding views of the Antelope Valley. Winter nights can be surprisingly cold, and summer days are brutal. Fire restrictions typically apply May through October.
