Tibbit Lake — Contwoyto Winter Road Southern Staging Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

Tibbit Lake sits at the southern terminus of the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road, roughly 70 km northeast of Yellowknife on the NWT side. In winter, this is where the ice road begins and where convoy drivers stage before heading north across the frozen lakes into the Barren Lands. The pull-off zone along the access road is flat, open tundra-edge gravel — no facilities, no signage, no amenities. You’re camping on Crown land in the boreal transition zone, with big sky and the sound of diesel rigs staging nearby when the road is active.

Access is via NWT Highway 4 (the Ingraham Trail) northeast of Yellowknife — the road is paved to Tibbit Lake. This is a winter-only operation zone; the TCWR JV controls access to the ice road itself. Dispersed camping here is practical only in the coldest months (January–March) when the road is running. Summer access exists on the Ingraham Trail but the ice road area is mud and bush. Cell signal is spotty at best — Yellowknife is your last reliable communications hub.

Last staging ground before the ice road begins.
