Fred Henne Territorial Park Campground — Great Slave Lake
Fred Henne sits on the north shore of Long Lake, less than 10 minutes from downtown Yellowknife and about 20 km from the Tibbitt Lake staging area at the start of the winter ice road. It’s a real territorial park — not a gravel lot — with treed sites, flush toilets, showers, and even a sandy beach on Great Slave. Fills up hard in summer with locals, but in late January and February when the ice road opens, it’s quiet and perfectly positioned for a pre-run gear check and sleep before heading north.
Open roughly mid-May to mid-October for the official camping season, but the day-use area stays accessible year-round. Winter ice road drivers using this as a staging base should confirm off-season access with GNWT Parks ahead of time. Cell service is full here — last reliable signal before the barren lands swallows you.
Last real camp before the ice road begins.
