Tatshenshini River — Dalton Post Gravel Bar Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

Dalton Post sits at the end of the navigable road off the Haines Highway, and the gravel bars flanking the Tatshenshini River here are the classic staging camp for paddlers and overland crews running the full Tat-Alsek corridor. The river braids through glacially silted channels; camps are flat, open, and windswept with big views back toward the St. Elias peaks. No facilities whatsoever — pit a cat hole, pack out everything. Expect mosquitoes mid-summer. Vehicle camping is on the gravel above the high-water line; respect the First Nations land around the village.

Access is via a short gravel spur off Haines Highway near Km 100 (approx. Haines Junction side). Road is passable by high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions but softens badly in rain. Season is June through September — the river is ice-bound and the road unreliable outside those months. No cell service. This is Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park / Tongass-adjacent land; tread accordingly.

Last flat camp before the Tat swallows you.
