Chilkat Lake Campground — Chilkat State Park

Established Campground

Chilkat State Park sits at the southern end of the Chilkat Peninsula, but the Chilkat Lake campground is the inland unit — tucked into the spruce and cottonwood flats where the Chilkat River drainage fans out toward the park boundary. This is bald eagle habitat in the extreme; the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve borders this country and concentrations of eagles here in late fall are genuinely world-class. Sites are basic Alaska DNR standard: fire rings, outhouses, room to breathe. Expect to share the valley with bears — this is brown bear country, hang your food or use canisters.

Access is via the Haines Highway corridor, making it a natural first-night or last-night stop for rigs running the Tatshenshini approach from Haines. Road to the park is paved or good gravel. Open roughly May through September; no reservations, pay on arrival. Cell service: none.
