Sinks Canyon State Park Visitor Center

Where the Popo Agie River vanishes into limestone caves and emerges a quarter-mile downstream as a crystal-clear spring.

This geological oddity showcases the Popo Agie River disappearing into underground caves at ‘The Sinks’ and mysteriously reappearing downstream at ‘The Rise’ — complete with rainbow trout that seem to materialize from nowhere. The visitor center explains the hydrology while paved trails lead to both phenomena. Interpretive exhibits cover local geology, wildlife, and Shoshone cultural history.

Located along scenic Highway 131 about 6 miles southwest of Lander. The center has clean restrooms, water, and knowledgeable staff who know current road conditions for backcountry routes heading deeper into the Wind Rivers. Popular day-use area that gets busy on summer weekends. Open seasonally with reduced winter hours.
