Shasta Bally Fire Lookout

Remote fire lookout in Northern California's Trinity Alps region offering spectacular views of Mount Shasta and the surrounding wilderness.

Perched at 6,209 feet on Shasta Bally’s summit, this fire lookout provides critical fire detection for the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The steel tower offers 360-degree views including Mount Shasta to the east, the Trinity Alps to the west, and Lassen Peak to the southeast. The lookout is staffed seasonally and features a traditional L-4 cab design with living quarters below the observation level. Clear days provide visibility extending over 100 miles in multiple directions.

Access via Forest Road 17N02 from Highway 299, a winding gravel road that climbs steadily through mixed conifer forest. The final approach requires high-clearance vehicles due to rocky sections and seasonal washouts. Road typically open June through October, weather dependent. Limited parking at the summit and no camping allowed. Cell service is non-existent, making this a true backcountry experience despite road access.
