Avenue of the Giants

This legendary drive parallels Highway 101 through Humboldt Redwoods State Park, winding between giants that were ancient when Rome was founded. The road passes through multiple groves including the famous Founder’s Grove, where the fallen Dyerville Giant once stood as the world’s tallest tree. Drive-through trees, hiking trails to hidden groves, and the Rockefeller Forest — the world’s largest remaining old-growth redwood forest — make this California’s most iconic tree experience. Morning fog filtering through 300-foot canopies creates an almost spiritual atmosphere.

The route runs from Garberville to Pepperwood, with numerous pullouts for photos and short walks. RVs and trailers navigate it fine, though some side roads to specific groves have height restrictions. Summer brings the heaviest traffic, while winter offers solitude but more rain. The visitor center at Burlington provides maps showing the best groves and current trail conditions. Spring wildflowers and fall colors add extra magic to the towering green cathedral.
