Saline Bayou National Wild and Scenic River

This 19-mile stretch of Saline Bayou cuts through some of Louisiana’s most untouched wilderness, offering a rare glimpse of what the state looked like before development. The river corridor protects old-growth bald cypress and tupelo swamps, with several primitive boat launches providing access for fishing, paddling, and wildlife watching. No developed facilities — just dirt access roads leading to muddy launch points where you might spot river otters, wood ducks, or even black bears.

Access roads can be rough after rain, requiring high-clearance vehicles. Most launches are unmarked except for small wooden signs. Spring offers the best water levels and wildflower displays, while summer brings thick mosquitoes and potential for low water. The river runs crystal clear over sandy bottoms — a rarity in Louisiana’s typically tannic waters.
