Rock River — Dempster Highway Km 113 Viewpoint and River Crossing
At roughly Km 113 north of the Dempster’s start, the highway descends sharply into the Rock River valley and crosses a steel bridge over one of the cleaner glacial streams along the entire route. The valley walls close in here, spruce and willow crowd the banks, and on a clear day the Ogilvie Mountains frame the skyline in every direction. It’s a genuine exhale moment — one of the first spots on the Dempster where the scale of what you’re driving into actually lands. Caribou sometimes cross the river near the bridge during migration.
No services whatsoever. Pull-off space exists on the south bank near the bridge for a quick stop and photo. Cell service is zero from Dawson City through this stretch and beyond. Road surface is typically maintained gravel but can develop deep washboard and soft shoulders after rain — slow down and read the surface. Best window is late June through early September before freeze-up.
