Tombstone Mountain — Tombstone Territorial Park Alpine Viewpoint

Pull off the Dempster around kilometre 72 and you’re staring at Tombstone Mountain and the surrounding serrated peaks of the Ogilvie Range — dark, angular granite shooting up from tundra that goes orange and crimson in late August. This is the visual centrepiece of Tombstone Territorial Park, a 2,200 square kilometre wilderness that most overlanders blow past without fully appreciating. The Yukon Government visitor centre at the park boundary is worth the stop for maps, bear intel, and current road conditions north to Eagle Plains.

Season runs late June through mid-September before the first serious snowfall closes things down. No cell service out here. The Dempster is gravel throughout — dusty in dry spells, slick clay after rain. A high-clearance rig is minimum; a full-size spare (or two) is non-negotiable. This viewpoint is accessible from the highway without any offroad driving.
