Palo Duro Canyon Lighthouse Formation
The Lighthouse is Palo Duro Canyon’s signature formation — a weathered pillar of red Permian sandstone that rises 310 feet from the canyon floor. This iconic spire sits roughly 3 miles into the canyon via the Lighthouse Trail, offering sweeping views across the painted badlands that stretch 120 miles long and 20 miles wide. Early morning and late afternoon light sets the red rock ablaze, making it prime photography time.
Access requires Texas State Park entry ($7 per adult) and a moderate 5.8-mile round-trip hike on well-marked trail. The trailhead has restrooms and water fountains, but carry extra water — summer temperatures can hit 100°F with little shade. Winter hiking is ideal, though occasional ice makes footing tricky near the formation.
