Nueces River Canyon — Chalk Bluff Road BLM-Adjacent Dispersed Camp
The Nueces River cuts a limestone canyon through Edwards and Real counties that most overlanders blow past on US-90. Pull off onto one of the county-maintained caliche roads near the Chalk Bluff area and you’ll find flat ground on private-adjacent state rights-of-way and low-water crossing approaches where rigs can camp legally on public road shoulders and open BLM-equivalent state land. Expect cedar elm shade, white caliche banks, and the river within earshot. No facilities, no signage — just rock and water and sky. Traffic is minimal outside deer season.
Access is via FM 334 or CR 348 off US-83 north of Uvalde. Ground is hard caliche and limestone — aired-down all-terrains handle it fine, but a 4WD with clearance is smart for the rougher spur tracks toward the bluff base. Late spring can push water levels; always check the Nueces gauge at Laguna before running the lower crossings. Fire restrictions follow Texas A&M Forest Service zone rules — verify before you light anything.
Limestone canyon, cedar scrub, zero crowds.
